Thomas F. Schraufnagel, 61, Lewiston

Thomas Franklin Schraufnagel, 61, of Lewiston, passed away Friday, Sept. 21, 2007, at St. Joseph Regional Medical Center with his loving family at his side. After a long battle with multiple medical illnesses, he passed away after his 61st birthday party with his family, from liver and renal failure.

Tom was born in Ashland, Wis., on Sept. 21, 1946, to Michael and Bette Schraufnagel. The family later moved to Lewiston when Tom was a young child. He graduated from Lewiston High School in 1964.

After graduation, he enlisted in the Navy on Nov. 5, 1964. During active duty, Tom volunteered to go to Vietnam, where he was attached to a Marine CAG unit. He was honorably discharged on Nov. 13, 1968. He earned the National Defense Service Medal, the Bronze Star for service in Vietnam, the Vietnam Campaign Medal and a Navy Unit Commendation Medal.

After his discharge Tom married Susan Day in 1970. They had one child, Katy Schraufnagel, in 1971. They later divorced. He later married Mary Helen Baldwin, on Sept. 23, 1972, in Pullman. They would have celebrated their 35th wedding anniversary today. They had two daughters, Annette and Sidona.

Tom worked for Potlatch for 33 years until he was medically retired in May 2001. He was an avid hunter and fisherman and thoroughly enjoyed the outdoors. His other hobbies included rock hounding and gun collecting. He also enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. He recently fulfilled his life-long dream of visiting Alaska in August 2007.

Tom is survived by his mother, Bette Schraufnagel of Lewiston; his wife, Mary, at their Lewiston home; his three daughters, Katy Mason and Annette Schraufnagel of Lewiston, and Sidona and her husband William Anderson of Hillsborough, N.J.; brother Mick and his wife Penny Schraufnagel of Boise; four grandchildren, Kayla Lietzke, Clayton and Juliana Mason of Lewiston, and MacKenzie Anderson of Hillsborough, N.J.; and one niece, Cinda Sharpensteen of Peoria, Ariz. He was very much loved and will be missed by everyone.

He was preceded in death by his father, Michael Schraufnagel, in 2004.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that memorials in Thomas's name may be made to the American Cancer Society or the Veterans of Foreign Wars of Lewiston.

There will be a public viewing at Mountain View Funeral home, located at 3521 Seventh St., Lewiston, from 5-7 p.m. on Monday. Funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. Stanislaus Roman Catholic Church in Lewiston, with graveside services immediately following at Lewis-Clark Memorial Gardens in Lewiston.
