2014 Reunion News:

In the last 50 years since high school, I have worked for and worked as the following:

After High School, while in college, during the summers I worked at the local green pea processing plants, the first summer at Smith’s Frozen Foods, then next store at what later became Twin City Foods. After graduating from the U of I Law School in 1970, my first job as an attorney was as an Army Captain, Judge Advocate General’s Corp (JAGC), starting with a special assignment with the U.S. Attorney’s Office in San Francisco, CA, then on to JAGC School in Charlottesville, VA during the fall of 1971. Then spent two years plus at Fort Huachuca, AZ and then finished my tour of duty at Fort Lewis, WA.

Got out of the Army September 29, 1974, and moved to Colfax, WA. On October 1, 1974, I started as the Whitman County Deputy Prosecuting Attorney; ten months later I was appointed Prosecuting Attorney/Ex-Officio County Coroner, a position I was elected to and twice re-elected to. In the spring of 1984, I resigned as Prosecutor, and became a partner in the Colfax Law Firm of Hickman, Webster, Ensley and Carpenter. Stayed with the law firm for six year, and during part of that time was the part-time Colfax Municipal Court Judge, and also a very frequent Judge Pro Tem in the Whitman County District Court.

April 17, 1990 I moved to Olympia, WA where I was appointed Deputy Clerk/Chief Staff Attorney for the Washington State Supreme Court. On January 1, 2007, I was appointed as Clerk of the Court, and continue to serve in that capacity.

I probably will retire on April 30, 2015, after 25 years with the Supreme Court.

My wife Carol (Lewiston Class of 1965) and I have three grown adult children: Matthew, Jeffrey, and Kimberly, we are very proud of them, and all of them graduated from college and have successful gone out on their own. Carol and I will have been happily married 45 years on August 16, 2014. Our daughter Kim and her husband, Aaron, have blessed us with three beautiful grandchildren: Jasper, 5 in May, Finnegan who turned 3 in January, and Daphne, who will be a year old July 10, 2014.

Carol retired two school years ago after 22 years as a Middle School Counselor in Elma, WA. We enjoy walking, riding our bikes, and with this year’s Bloomsday Race on May 4, I hope to start running again. Both of us are in good health at the moment, and I am looking forward to retirement in April of next year. We have several trip planned in the near future: In May a short trip to Spokane for the Bloomsday Race (my son Jeff is flying in from West Haven, Conn to run with me - he and I have done the race ever year since 1986) and then we are on to Lewiston for a few days to visit with family; Bend, Oregon in June with Kim, Aaron and the grandchildren, renting a home there for six days; Carol and I leave for Richmond, VA for two weeks on July 10; and then probably a trip in the early fall, not sure where yet. Of course intend to be at the 50th Reunion.

Update Aug 17, 2009:

Past highlights: Carol and I celebrated our 40th Wedding Anniversary on August 16, 2009. Been in our new home we build just over 5 years now, and are still really enjoying it and kayaking on Black Lake. In December 2004, our daughter Kim became the final of our three children to successfully graduate from college, and she also got married in October of 2005. So we have now satisfied all of our big financial commitments to the children, and can earnestly start the process of spending their inheritance. My youngest son (Jeff) and I continue to run in Bloomsday each May, have been doing such together since 1986 when he was in the fifth grade. Otherwise don’t run much the rest of the year, but defer to walking and riding my bicycle – less trauma to my knees and hips -trying to stay active to maintain good health. Also, on of May 12, 2009, our daughter gave birth to our first grandchild: a grandson- Jasper; so we are respectively learning all about being a grandpa and grandma. I remain active in the National Conference of Appellate Court Clerks (NCACC), so continue to visit a new city in August of each year to attend our week long summer conference. Have visited the following in the last 5 years: Anchorage Alaska in 2004; Key West, Florida in 2005; Forth Worth, Texas in 2006; New Orleans, LA in 2007; Pittsburgh, Pa. in 2008, and Sacramento, CA in 2009.

Future Plans: Still hoping to do more traveling; keep up the moderate exercise, and stay as healthy as the passage of time allows. Carol starts her 20th year as a middle school counselor on August 20, 2009; and she is starting to seriously consider when she should retire. Because of the cost of medical insurance, I probably will not retire before the end of 2011, the year I turn 65.

2004 Reunion News:

Past highlights: Deputy Clerk/Attorney at the WA State Supreme Court Past highlights: We have managed to get our two older children through college and our youngest will graduate from Western Washington University in December of this year; so can sort of see the "light at the end of the tunnel". Just completed construction and moved into our "dream home". In connection with my membership in the Nation Conference of Appellate Clerks, I have in recent years been privileged to attend conferences in: Portsmouth New Hampshire, Savannah GA, New Port Beach CA, etc. This August we plan to attend the NCACC summer conference in Anchorage, Alaska. I have continued with my running (but at a reduced level-more bicycling)-a little over 3 years ago I was struck by a car while on my bike and have been slowly getting over trauma to my left hip. Every year, except for two in the early 80's, I have run the Bloomsday race in Spokane (also our youngest son Jeff has run Bloomsday with me every year since about 87). So I have maintained good health, and most importantly, am still happily married (will be 35 years August 16, 2004).

Future Plans: I hope to do more traveling; keep exercising at lest at a moderate rate and stay healthy. Probably will retire in the next 3-6 years (depending on health and then the reality of medical care costs and expenses).
